The Nordic Swan is a voluntary ecolabel applicable in various European Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland). The label evaluates a product's impact on the environmental considering the entire life cycle, in order to guarantee, among others, that climate requirements are taken into account, and that carbon emissions are limited. The Nordic Swan Ecolabel follows the ISO 14024 standard and is a Type 1 ecolabel. The approach applies the RPS model (Relevance, Potential, Steerability).

The main objective of the RenewIT project is to develop a simulation tool to evaluate the energy performance of different technical solution integrating renewable energy sources in IT Data Centres. The public RenewIT tool will be implemented in a user-friendly web interface helping actors from both the energy and IT sectors to reduce the carbon footprint of planned Data Centres in the horizon of 2030. The tool is based on selected meta-models extracted from advanced dynamic simulation models of challenging energy concepts for renewable energy supply of Data Centres.

The result is a product score, ranging from 0 points (lowest performance) to 100 points (highest performance).

Within the project Sustainable Software Design, a methodology will be developed based on appropriate criteria and indicators to better assess the environmental impact of software.  The methodology will support developers during the design process of resource efficient software as well as operators and users in the procurement process of existing software solutions. Also, it should be possible to compare the impacts on natural resources for two similar given softwares.
