Claim To Fame:

In the laboratory of Advanced Computer (LCA) in the University Coimbra was installed a free-cooling system of about 170.000 BTU/hour. When outdoor temperature is below the indoor temperature (mostly at night and/or in winter), cold ambient air is drawn inside the data centre to accomplish cooling while the conventional mechanical chilling system is off (or in standby). As only fans, humidifiers or dehumidifiers and controls are the only power consuming components, airside economisers present a great opportunity for energy saving.

Main benefits & Achieved Results :

The equipment was 100 % financed by a measure of the Portuguese utility within the scope of the DSM Portuguese program. The costs of installation of the system were at about € 6040 (50 % financed by the measure). Taking into account the financial incentive, the payback was estimated to be about one year. The system enables to save 90 MWh/year and to decrease the PUE of 0,2.

Presentation of the initiative:

The system was implemented beteween 2008 and 2010 and concerned 132 servers. The measurement concept is based on an energy consumption monitoring (15 to 15 minutes during one week). The measurement points for energy consumption were the data centre panel board and HVAC panel board.

Commitments for the future & other relevant information:

The mission of the Laboratory for Advanced Computing (Laboratório de Computação Avançada - LCA) at University of Coimbra is to support the research efforts of scientists performing research which needs high-performance computing. In addition, LCA provides support for advanced computing courses within the University. To accomplish this, LCA engages in the following activities:

  • Evaluates, acquires and deploys high performance computing resources, including both computing systems and software.
  • Offers training workshops and seminars to educate and prepare new users of these resources.
  • Provides expert consulting and documentation to assist researchers in using these resources effectively.
  • Collaborate with other computing centers and other Universities to enhance the capabilities of the resources in use at the Laboratory.
