GHG Protocol
The Greenhouse Gas Protocol provides standards, guidance, tools, and trainings for business and government leaders to quantify and manage GHG emissions and become more efficient, resilient, and prosperous.
A nearly 20-year long partnership between the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) works with governments, industry associations, NGOs, businesses, and other organizations around the world to build credible, effective, and robust GHG accounting and reporting platforms that serve as a foundation to address climate change. It establishes comprehensive, global, standardized frameworks for measuring and managing emissions from private and public sector operations, value chains, products, cities, and policies.
GHG Protocol provides training opportunities and capacity-building support on its standards and tools. In addition, GHG Protocol offers companies and organizations the opportunity to apply for the “Built on GHG Protocol” mark that recognizes sector guidance, product rules, and tools that are in conformance with GHG Protocol standards.
The Greenhouse Gas Protocol supplies the world's most widely used greenhouse gas accounting standards. In 2014, 86% of Fortune 500 companies responding to the CDP used the GHG Protocol directly or indirectly through a program based on GHG Protocol.
The Corporate Standard provides the accounting platform for virtually every corporate GHG reporting program in the world. We also work with partners in key countries to develop national GHG emissions programs based on the GHG Protocol. Through their committment to the Compact of Mayors, hundreds of cities across the globe have also committed to using the GHG Protocol for Cities.
